The Forty Maidens of Chilpyk and Kirk-Kyz: Two Sites, Many Stories

“Forty Maidens” is a name that appears in stories attached to more than one Central Asian site. Chilpyk in Karakalpakstan and Kirk-Kyz near Termez are not the same monument: they lie far apart and belong to different historical landscapes. Their legends are best enjoyed with that distinction in mind, rather than combined into one supposedly documented tale of Silk Road warrior women.

1. Chilpyk above the Amu Darya

When: Visit in spring or autumn, ideally outside the hottest part of the day. Where: Karakalpakstan, within a road trip from Nukus. The Vibe: A circular earthen monument on an open hill above the river plain. Chilpyk is widely interpreted as a Zoroastrian funerary tower, often called a Tower of Silence. Its elevated position gives expansive views over the Amu Darya landscape. Local stories connect the place with dramatic figures and ancient customs, but the archaeological interpretation and the folklore are different kinds of evidence. When: Set aside a separate day if travelling in southern Uzbekistan. Where: Near Termez in Surkhandarya, not near Nukus. The Vibe: A quiet mud-brick complex whose rooms invite questions. Kirk-Kyz, commonly translated as “Forty Maidens,” is an early medieval monument. Scholars have proposed different functions for the structure, including a residence, religious institution or fortified compound. A popular legend tells of forty young women defending themselves, but there is no single verified account that should be presented as the building’s confirmed history.

When: Before planning your route or booking a guide. Where: The two sites belong to separate regional itineraries. The Vibe: Similar names, distinct places and histories. “Forty” and “maidens” are recurring motifs in regional storytelling. Confirm the exact site name, location and driving plan with your operator. Reaching Chilpyk usually fits a Karakalpakstan itinerary; Kirk-Kyz is usually combined with Termez’s Buddhist and medieval heritage.

When: Check road conditions and local access shortly before departure. Where: Remote landscapes where shade and services may be limited. The Vibe: A thoughtful field visit, not a staged legend.
