Traditional Silk Making: From Silkworm Cocoons to Margilan Atlas

Margilan’s silk story is easiest to understand by following the material step by step: silkworms produce cocoons, filaments are reeled into thread, and artisans prepare and dye warp threads before weaving atlas. This is a different focus from a general visit guide: here, the point is to notice the labor hidden inside a finished length of cloth.

  • From cocoon to thread

Visit a working craft center and ask which stages are demonstrated today. Silk workshops in Margilan, in Uzbekistan’s Fergana Valley. Warm, tactile and built from patient handwork. After cocoons are harvested, filaments are softened and reeled into usable silk. Workshop practices vary, and a tourist demonstration may show only selected stages. Ask which steps are carried out on site and which materials arrive from elsewhere.

  • How ikat becomes atlas

Watch the preparation of the warp before it reaches the loom. Dyeing and weaving rooms in Margilan. A pattern planned in thread before the cloth appears. In warp ikat, sections of the threads are bound and dyed before weaving, creating blurred edges where colors meet. Atlas is associated with silk fabric, while adras often combines silk and cotton. Patterns require careful alignment, and small variations are part of hand production.

  • Support the living craft

Buy directly from a workshop or trusted artisan where possible. Margilan craft centers, including heritage workshops. Colorful, skilled and connected to generations of knowledge. Ask about fiber content, dye process and who made the fabric. Some pieces are blended or machine-produced; that does not make them worthless, but buyers should know what they are purchasing. UNESCO has recognized Margilan’s practice of safeguarding atlas and adras-making traditions. Ask the craftsperson to show the tied warp before weaving. It makes the ikat pattern far easier to understand than seeing only the finished cloth.
