How to Be a Respectful Guest in Central Asia
One of the pleasures of travelling through Central Asia is how quickly you can stop feeling like a stranger.
You may be offered tea in Uzbekistan, welcomed into a yurt in Kyrgyzstan, invited to try food at a family table or find yourself talking with an artisan far longer than expected.
Hospitality, respect for elders and strong family and community ties remain important across Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. At the same time, these are five different countries, and customs vary between families, regions, cities and rural communities.
